Three weeks before the tumultuous event of Brexit, two months ahead of the global quarantine, and one year prior to the cracking of my financial stability, I made the bold move to Madrid. My initial plan was simple: a one-year sabbatical to recalibrate my life’s trajectory, sample the expat experience, explore the vibrant city, engage with the intriguing Spanish culture (and men!), and perhaps, amidst all the adventures, elevate my Spanish proficiency from a timid ‘Hola’ to a confident ‘Que Tal?’ Sadly, my language progression during that first year closely resembled this journey — slow and uncertain.

Yet, amidst the linguistic struggles, something magical happened. I found myself immersed in a unique chapter of my life, living in a dynamic co-living space. For the first time, I let go of the shackles of convention and allowed myself to make decisions purely for the joy they promised me. I traded cautious planning for spontaneous adventures and self-discovery.

Three years have now passed since I first embraced the expat life. I’ve forged deep connections, etched unforgettable memories, and discovered a profound sense of belonging in this vibrant Spanish capital. As long as I can continue to carve out my niche here, returning home is a distant thought.

However, being an expat is no walk in the park. It comes with its unique set of trials and tribulations, ones that can be challenging to comprehend until you’ve experienced them firsthand. Imagine grappling with the stress of deciphering your neighbor’s cryptic requests in an unfamiliar language, navigating a bureaucratic labyrinth with no discernible map, and the subtle yet persistent pangs of loneliness that weave themselves into your daily life. These feelings may be universal, but there’s an intensity to them when you’re away from home.

Now, on the cusp of a new chapter, I find myself embarking on an exhilarating yet daunting journey. I am starting my own company in the bustling heart of Madrid. I want to take you along on this adventure, sharing the highs and lows as I navigate the intricate web of entrepreneurship in a foreign land. Join me as I dive headfirst into the unknown, embracing the challenges, cherishing the victories, and painting a vivid picture of ‘Where I Am Now’ in this next chapter of my life.”
